Nigeria’s table tennis legend, Olufunke Oshonaike has extended her retirement by a year due to the postponement of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.
The veteran, who will clock 45 in a couple of days has revealed she will wait a year to compete in her last Olympics before dropping the racket.
Speaking to Making of Champions, Oshonaike said she will use the year to prepare and keep fit.
“Coronavirus has taken the Olympics away until 2021, it’s okay as long as we are safe, I was meant to retire this year after the Olympics but with this postponement, I have one more year to go”.

Oshonaike has been playing active tennis for over 2 decades and had plans of retiring this year after the Olympics, before it was postponed to next year.
She is the first African female athlete to qualify for seven Olympic Games.
Oshonaike had featured in six previous Olympic Games starting with Atlanta 1996, Sydney 2000, Athens 2004, Beijing 2008, London 2012 and Rio 2016.
