492 appearances, 41 goals and 49 assists: Taye Taiwo joins 12th club in 16 years

Former Nigeria international Taye Taiwo has joined Cypriot club Doxa Katokopias after leaving Veikkausliiga side RoPS in January.

The 35-year-old left-back played 31 games and scored twice in the Finnish league last season.

Doxa Katokopias is Taiwo’s 12th club in his 16 years of active football. Started his playing career in Nigeria with Gabros and Lobi Stars before moving France with Marseille in the French Ligue 1.

He also played for Italian giant AC Milan, Queens Park Rangers, Dynamo Kyiv, Bursaspor, HJK Helsinki, Lausanne and AFC Eskilstuna.

He has won 6 trophies and would be hoping to get more in Cyprus.

Taiwo who is blessed with a fierce left foot is known for his bullet free-kicks and long-range shots.

Reports in the media claimed that Taiwo had a twin who was older than him, but in an interview with respected Nigerian journalist Collin Udoh, he opened up on the age cheat allegation.

“People don’t even know the background of someone but they just write what they don’t know about,” the former AC Milan man said on Instagram Live.

“When I was younger, my father told me that I was a twin but the second was a girl and we lost her. So how come since Taye Taiwo started playing football, going to the World Cup, and there is no picture of my twin?

“When I was in London, they started doing a joke around. A journalist came to the training ground to ask me if I have a twin. I was like what kind of question is that? I don’t have. I was feeling very bad though. But it’s a free world.”

Taiwo made his debut on Nov 17, 2004, at 19 years, 7 months and 1 day, played at the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa, two Nation Cups and won 2 bronze medals at the African showpiece, ending his international career with 54 caps and 5 goals.

Taiwo last featured for Nigeria in February 2012.
