Taiwo Awoniyi optimistic of Nigeria’s chances against Benin Republic and Rwanda

Nigeria’s Taiwo Awoniyi is optimistic about the Super Eagles’ prospects ahead of their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier against Benin Republic on Saturday. The match, to be held at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo, marks a crucial step in Nigeria’s quest for a 21st AFCON appearance.

Awoniyi, who plays for Nottingham Forest, is concerned by the team’s recent form, including their 2-1 comeback loss over Benin Republic in June’s 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers. Despite the challenges, he believes Nigeria’s depth of talent and home advantage will be key factors in securing a win.

“We know what is at stake,” Awoniyi told Flashscore. “For the fact that we lost against them before, and now that we are playing at home, this should be to our advantage. Football is about working hard as a team and playing for each other. If we do that, I believe we will get the three points because we have the talents.”

Following the clash with Benin Republic, Nigeria will travel to Kigali for a match against Rwanda at Stade Amahoro. Despite Rwanda’s impressive record, with only one defeat in their last seven games, Awoniyi remains unfazed, confident that the Super Eagles have the ability to secure victories across Africa.

“It is something big when it comes to playing for the Super Eagles. I think we have what it takes to win,” he said. “We have what it takes to win every game in Africa. It’s about putting everything together and fighting for the country’s pride.”

Amidst this build-up, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) faced unexpected disruptions with their coaching staff. German tactician Bruno Labbadia was announced as the new Super Eagles coach but departed just four days later due to complications with German tax regulations. The NFF has since appointed Augustine Eguavoen as interim coach.

Awoniyi downplayed any potential negative impact of the coaching changes on the team’s performance. “Our job is to play football and leave administrative matters to the officials,” he stated. “For us, it’s about giving our best for the country.”

The striker is making a return to the national team after a ten-month absence due to a groin injury sustained during a World Cup qualifier against Lesotho. His injury prevented him from participating in the 2023 AFCON, where Nigeria finished as runners-up.

Expressing his return to full fitness, Awoniyi emphasized the collective spirit of the team. “Playing for the Super Eagles is a great privilege for every player,” he noted. “Everyone called up is excited and will give their best. The focus is on putting the country first and ensuring we win, which will bring joy to many Nigerians.”
