Former Nigeria U-17 and U-20 international, Charles Etim made his much-anticipated Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) debut for Akwa United in a 0-0 draw against Lobi Stars at the Lafia City Stadium on Monday, September 9, 2024.
Etim was trusted with a starting spot in central defense, partnering new signing Endurance Edebidiri as Akwa United’s head coach Baba Ganaru focused on a solid defensive structure. The pair held firm, ensuring the Promise Keepers kept Lobi Stars at bay, despite several dangerous moments from the opposition.
Akwa United, however, were unable to capitalize on the chances they created, with substitute Mare Gibson missing a golden opportunity in the dying moments to secure a win. Gibson found himself in a one-on-one situation but could not beat the goalkeeper, leaving the game goalless.

Despite the missed opportunities, Akwa United’s strong defensive display, marshaled by Etim, bodes well for the former NPFL champions as they aim to be title contenders this season. Etim, who arrived from Blessed Stars Football Academy, Uyo, showed glimpses of the talent that earned him national team recognition and is expected to be a key figure in the squad.
The goalless draw, though fair, will leave Akwa United feeling they could have started their 2024-25 NPFL campaign with a victory. Nevertheless, with 17 new signings, including Etim, the club has strengthened considerably and is determined to make a mark this season.
Akwa United will now shift their attention to their upcoming matches, as they look to build momentum and establish themselves as serious contenders in the race for the NPFL title.
