Xabi Alonso reveals unique approach to managing ‘funny’ Victor Boniface

Bayer Leverkusen manager Xabi Alonso has opened up about his unique relationship with Nigerian striker Victor Boniface, revealing how he keeps the talented forward focused on football.

Boniface, known for his playful personality both on and off the field, has made a strong start to the season, scoring three goals and providing an assist in just four matches.

Despite his jovial nature, which often shines through on social media where he shares memes and interacts with fans, Alonso highlighted the importance of balancing fun with focus in a competitive environment.

The Leverkusen boss explained how Boniface is well-liked by his teammates and brings a positive atmosphere to the dressing room, but there are times when he has to ensure that the 21-year-old striker remains concentrated on his football.

Speaking after Boniface’s standout performance in a 4-1 victory over Mainz, where the striker netted twice and provided an assist, Alonso acknowledged the challenge of managing such a lively personality. “All the teammates really like him. The guy creates a great atmosphere. Sometimes you have to force him to focus only on football, but that’s my job; that’s what I’m trying to do,” Alonso said.

Boniface’s light-hearted demeanor, often displayed in fun interactions with teammates like teasing fellow Super Eagles player Taiwo Awoniyi, is part of what makes him unique. However, under Alonso’s guidance, the striker has been able to channel that energy into his performances on the pitch, continuing his rise as one of Europe’s brightest talents.
