Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) President Ibrahim Gusau paid a visit to Enyimba’s dressing room after their thrilling victory over Etoile Filante in the final qualifying match of the CAF Confederation Cup (CAFCC) in Uyo on Sunday.
Enyimba, popularly known as the People’s Elephant, secured their spot in the CAFCC group stage with a 3-2 win on penalties, following a goalless draw across both legs. Gusau, who was present at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium to support the team, took the opportunity to personally congratulate the players on their hard-fought win.
In his address to the team, Gusau urged the players to focus on their performance and results, advising them not to let financial concerns overshadow their ambitions. “These are your officials, please, don’t be talking about money all the time,” Gusau said. “Money will come. Now you have won the match, whether you like it or not, you know you have earned something.”

Despite dominating the match, Enyimba failed to convert their chances, allowing Etoile Filante to force the match into a penalty shootout. However, the team held their nerve and emerged victorious, much to the delight of their fans and officials.
Looking ahead to the next phase of the CAFCC, Gusau assured the team of the NFF’s continued support, stating, “Going further, please let us know as early as possible, we will support you.” He expressed his congratulations on behalf of all Nigerian football stakeholders, emphasizing the significance of Enyimba’s victory for the nation.
Gusau’s visit highlights the importance placed on Enyimba’s continental campaign by the NFF. As Nigeria’s sole representatives in the CAFCC, the People’s Elephant now carry the hopes of the nation into the group stage of the competition. Gusau also drew a comparison between the NPFL and the English Premier League, noting the progress Nigerian football is making on the international stage.
Enyimba, under coach Yemi Olanrewaju, will now focus on their upcoming group stage matches, with Gusau’s visit serving as a reminder of the high expectations and support from Nigeria’s football governing body.
