Moroccan star Achraf Hakimi has expressed his desire to claim the prestigious CAF Men’s Player of the Year award, as excitement reaches a crescendo ahead of the 2024 CAF Awards at the Palais des Congrès de Marrakech.
The Paris Saint-Germain defender, who has been pivotal for both club and country, addressed the speculation surrounding his potential victory in an interview on the French program Téléfoot, as reported by Le Sport Info.
“This nomination recognises all the hard work I’ve put in since I was a child. I hope to win this important trophy in my career,” said Hakimi.
A graduate of Real Madrid’s academy, Hakimi has enjoyed a phenomenal season. His contributions helped PSG secure another Ligue 1 title and a Coupe de France victory. On the international stage, he showcased his leadership and skill, securing a bronze medal with Morocco at the Paris Olympics, further bolstering his case for the top honour.

The Heated Race for Men’s Player of the Year
While Hakimi’s stellar achievements make him a strong contender, Nigeria’s Ademola Lookman is widely regarded as the frontrunner for the award. The Atalanta forward led his team to their first major trophy in 70 years and was instrumental in Nigeria’s silver-medal finish at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.

Lookman’s clinical finishing and creativity have elevated Atalanta’s fortunes, earning him widespread acclaim across Europe. Like Hakimi, he has also spoken about the honour of being nominated and the pride of representing African football on the global stage.
Speculation and Anticipation
Rumours surrounding the winner have intensified in recent weeks. Reports from Foot Mercato suggest that Hakimi could be named the winner despite the prevailing belief that Lookman is the favourite. These claims have only heightened the intrigue ahead of the ceremony.
