Enugu State is set to host the 2026 National Sports Festival (NSF) for the first time in 28 years, with Governor Peter Mbah promising top-tier facilities and a memorable experience for all involved.
On Tuesday, the National Sports Commission (NSC) officially presented the hosting rights to Governor Mbah during a ceremony at the Enugu State Government House.
The event also included discussions on key planning elements, such as infrastructure development, logistics, and the potential economic and social benefits for the state.
Governor Mbah expressed pride in Enugu’s long-standing sports legacy and assured that the state would meet the high standards required to host the prestigious event.
He emphasized that the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium and other facilities would undergo significant upgrades to ensure a world-class experience for both athletes and spectators.
“Enugu has always been a key player in Nigeria’s sporting history,” Governor Mbah said. “We are prepared to host the 2026 National Sports Festival(NSF) and are already working on several projects to ensure our facilities meet international standards.”
Hon. Bukola Olopade, Director-General of the NSC, praised Governor Mbah’s commitment, noting that this marks the first time the host state for the next edition of the NSF is announced well ahead of the current festival.
Olopade expressed confidence that this proactive approach would set a new standard for hosting the event.
“We are confident Enugu will deliver a spectacular festival,” Olopade said. “With this early announcement, we are ensuring enough time for planning and ensuring the success of the festival.”
