Rivers United narrow gap to Remo Stars with win; Ikorodu City compound Lobi stars NPFL misery

Rivers United closed the gap to just eight points behind leaders Remo Stars with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Niger Tornadoes on Saturday in the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) matchday 28.

The match, held at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium, saw Samson Obi score the only goal of the game in the 81st minute. Super Eagles head coach Éric Chelle was in attendance, observing the game between Rivers United and Niger Tornadoes.

In other action, Remo Stars suffered a 2-1 defeat to Bendel Insurance at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin City. Meyinwa Oritseweyinmi scored twice for Bendel Insurance, while Arinze Anakwe netted the only goal for Remo Stars.

With the result, Remo Stars remain at the top of the table with 54 points from 28 matches, while Rivers United have 46 points.

In another match of the day, Ikorodu City secured a 1-0 away win over Lobi Stars, with Shola Adelani scoring the decisive goal in the 81st minute.

Lobi Stars are still searching for their first win of the year, having not won a match since December 14, 2024, a run of 11 games (7 losses, 4 draws). They currently sit in 20th place.

Adelani’s goal marked a milestone for Ikorodu City, as it was their 40th goal of the season, making them the first team to reach that mark. Averaging 1.42 goals per game, Ikorodu City moved up to third place on the league table with the win.
