Former Arsenal striker Emmanuel Adebayor has supported Nigerian football legend Jay-Jay Okocha in criticizing ex-Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher over his comments about the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
The controversy began when Carragher downplayed the significance of AFCON in a player’s chances of winning the Ballon d’Or. His remarks triggered backlash from several African football legends, including Okocha, who dismissed Carragher’s opinion.

“There are some opinions you simply ignore,” Okocha stated. “If you look at their career and the way they played, you’ll understand. Honestly, would you want your son to play like Jamie Carragher? He can never fully appreciate African football or the talent we produce.”
Adebayor reinforced Okocha’s stance, voicing his disappointment while taking a direct jab at Carragher’s career.
“I’ve seen many African legends respond to Carragher’s comment, and I think Okocha put it perfectly,” Adebayor said. “Would I want my son to be a footballer and be named Jamie Carragher? No. Would I want to play like him? Never—I’m an entertainer. It’s disappointing that he looks down on our continent.”
