Super Eagles defender Leon Balogun has shared his thoughts following Rangers’ dramatic 3-2 penalty shootout victory over Jose Mourinho’s Fenerbahçe in the UEFA Europa League Round of 16 second leg in Glasgow.
The 36-year-old veteran defender played a vital role in the two-legged tie, replacing an injured Robin Propper in Turkey before putting in a great shift at Ibrox last night.
The Nigerian center-back acknowledged the challenges his team faced during the match, admitting they made things more difficult than necessary.
“It was a tough match; we made it harder for ourselves than necessary. We struggled significantly on the pitch, and everyone saw that,” Balogun said.
Despite the struggles, the Scottish giants displayed resilience to grind out the victory in front of their passionate home fans.
“However, we fought, stayed united, and persevered until the end. It was also a great moment for Jack Butland. Sometimes, you have to accept things as they are. We laid the groundwork last week and would have liked to score a goal early in the match to help us relax, but that didn’t happen,” he added.

The Nigerian international also acknowledged the unwavering support of the Rangers faithful, dedicating the victory to them amid the club’s challenges both on and off the pitch.
“The fans in the stands give their all. They face challenges too, especially considering what has happened off the pitch and our ups and downs in the league. I believe I speak for everyone when I say that this win is for them.”

Rangers will now face Spanish La Liga side, Athletic Bilbao, in the UEFA Europa League quarter finals. The first leg will be played at Ibrox on April 10, while the second leg will be played on the 17th of April at Estadio San Mames in Spain.
