RS Berkane beat Orlando Pirates to clinch second Confederation Cup trophy

Moroccan giant, RS Berkane defeated South African side Orlando Pirates 5-4 on penalties after a 1-1 draw in extra time on Friday in Uyo, Nigeria.

Youssef El Fahli ended the competition with another goal from the spot awarded after the referee reviewed a foul on a VAR monitor in the seven minutes of extra time for Berkane, his sixth goal of the competition.

Orlando Pirates found the equalizer in the 117th minute when a tame shot from Thembinkosi Lorch evaded everyone in a crowded goalmouth to take the match to penalties.

The Moroccans continued their dominance of the CAF Confederation Cup in recent years, scoring all five in the shootout, while Lorch who was awarded Man of the Match missed his spot kick as the South Africans continue their search for a continental trophy.

RS Berkane were playing in their third CAF Confederation Cup final in the last four years, having loss to Zamalek in 2019, Berkane came back to win the trophy in 2020.

Head Coach Florent Ibengé in his post match conference said it could not have been easy for him to lose another final having lost two previously.

“I’ve lost two finals, one against ES Setif and one against Raja Casablanca with AS Vita Club, today, I didn’t come here to lose another one.

“I am proud of my players, the club, my staff, my family, the people of Morocco and DR Congo because they are watching me today and they are very proud of our victory,” the former DR Congo defender and head coach said.

Moroccan clubs have dominated the competition in the last six editions – 2018 and 2020; RS Berkane 2020 and 2022).
