Bayelsa Queens of Nigeria returned to winning ways with a resounding 0-2 victory over TP Mazembe of DR Congo in the ongoing CAF Women’s Champions League in Morocco.
The Prosperity Girls lost their opening game in Group B to Mamelodi Sundowns of South Africa on Monday.
First half goals from Miracle Joseph (PK – 3 minutes) and Chinyere Igbomalu (24) were enough to secure their first victory in Stade de Marrakech.
Bayelsa made a fine start to the duel as Igbomalu was brought down inside the box as early as they opening 30 seconds of the match for Joseph to convert the ensuing penalty and put the Nigerians in front.
The WAFU-B representatives went on to add another when Juliet Sunday teed up Chinyere Igbomalu to blast home on the second attempt after her first was rebuffed by keeper Yvonne Obonga in the 24th minute to ensure a two-goal lead at half time.
The win moves the Nigerian champions to second on the table with three points behind leaders Mamelodi Sundowns (6 points).
They will take on Egyptian side, Wadi Degla Women in their final group match on Sunday (7pm), to book a place in the knockout stage of the competition.
In the other group game on Thursday, Mamelodi Sundowns secured a comfortable 5-0 win over Wadi Degla to remain top with six points.
Though with no point in their first two group games, there is still a fighting chance for Wadi Degla to proceed to the semi-final if the results go their way.
Mamelodi Sundowns will take on TP Mazembe Women in their final group game on Sunday.
