City Bet FC defeated Achang Bombers FC to emerged champions of the second edition of Rt. Hon. Okpolupm Etteh Unity Cup.
After a pulsating goalless but entertaining 90 minutes on Sunday, December 11, 2022, City Bet FC lifted the trophy for the 2022 edition, winning 4-3 from the penalty shootout despite missing their first spot kick.
Oyuikpa FC defeated Deeceepees (AKSU) 5 – 4 on penalty to win the third place.
As it happened last year, the home supporters had little to cheer with their visitors from Eket going home with the trophy and the cash prize of one million (N1,000,000.00) naira.
24 teams participated in this year’s edition and City Bet FC successfully dethrone Dhemiuz Football Club won the maiden edition of the competition in 2021.
Rt. Hon. Okpolupm Etteh, who was represented at the event by the Director General of Okpolupm Etteh Campaign Organization, Hon. Kingsley Mbre, applauded Eket Federal Constituency Grassroots Coaches Association, who are the organisers of the tournament, describing football as a unifying factor for the people of the area.
According to the Chairman of the Local Organizing Committee, Coach Mfreke Etang, said the “competition in two years has successfully scouted 45 talented players out of the 480 that has so far participated in the competition, including students from the Akwa Ibom State University who played in the competition.”
He called on corporate bodies to join hands with Rt. Hon. Etteh to push these talents to professional level.
Rt. Hon. Okpolupm Etteh is the candidate of the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) for the ONNA/Eket/Esit Eket/Ibeno Federal Constituency at the forthcoming 2023 general elections. He is a former member representing Esit Eket/Ibeno at the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly and the immediate past Commissioner, Ministry of Special Duties in Akwa Ibom State.
