Al Ahly, one of the leading successful clubs in Egypt has hosted the delegates sent from FIFA, CAF at their headquarters in preparation for participating in the African Super League.
As revealed, the new proposed tournament is set to kick off in August 2023 next year and Al Ahly are putting everything in motion for participation.
The delegates showed great interest in Al Ahly’s participation in the Super League stating that Ahly’s popularity and historical achievements on both the continental and global levels will contribute significantly to the success of the competition.
President of CAF Patrice Motsepe said that the winning club will get $11.5 million.
He added that the 24 teams partaking in the competition will receive $2.5 million each to help cover expenses.
CAF didn’t announce the names of the 24 African clubs which will take part in the first season neither did it give details of the exact format.
A further announcement from CAF about the competition will be communicated later.
FIFA president Gianni Infantino had already given his backing to the project. During a lunch event following CAF general assembly, he was quoted as saying that this project “will make African club football shine.”
What is the African Super League?
The Africa Super League will be an annual continental club football competition run by the CAF that is set to kickoff in August 2023.
It was announced on 28 November 2019 by Gianni Infantino, President of FIFA. It was launched on 10 August 2022 in Tanzania, and will include twenty-four elite African clubs with a promotion/relegation system.
The essence of holding this tournament is the huge financial returns, projected to exceed $100 million, to be used to develop and improve stadiums, infrastructure and the promotion of African football.
