Coach Edward Green joins Sporting Lagos from Akwa United

Sporting Lagos has unveiled the latest addition to their first-team coaching staff, UEFA-C licensed coach Edward Green. This announcement marks an exciting milestone in the club’s pursuit of excellence in football.

Edward Green’s journey to Sporting Lagos has been shaped by a wealth of experience, most recently serving as the assistant coach at NPFL (Nigeria Premier Football League) side Akwa United for an impressive five years. 

During his tenure with The Promise Keepers, Coach Edward Green played a pivotal role in the club’s backroom staff, contributing significantly to their NPFL triumph in 2021. His expertise extended beyond the first team, as he directly supervised the training of the U-15 sides, guiding them to the knockout stages of various editions of the prestigious La Liga U-15 Championship.

Prior to his association with Akwa United, Coach Edward Green started his professional coaching career as an assistant coach at Ikot Ekpene United, a grassroots football team nestled in Akwa Ibom.

Over the course of three years, he witnessed the remarkable rise of the team, culminating in two finals of the Young Stars championship. Coach Edward’s journey with Ikot Ekpene United reached its pinnacle when he assumed the role of head coach and led the team to a resounding victory in the Governor’s Cup finals in 2018.

What sets Coach Edward apart in the football world is his unique trajectory. Unlike many individuals who aspired to become professional football players, Coach Edward’s passion for the beautiful game manifested in his love for its administrative aspects. 

Even during his formative years, he exhibited a penchant for organizing friendly games within his community, ensuring that every detail, from the abundance of footballs to the quality of goalposts, met a high standard. 

Coach Edward reminisces, “I never played so much growing up, but I really enjoyed making sure everything was well organised. I would make sure we had enough balls and the posts we used were of a decent standard.” 

In light of his appointment at Sporting Lagos, Coach Edward Green is brimming with enthusiasm and a strong sense of purpose. He eagerly anticipates contributing to the club’s ongoing success and the exciting project they are building. 

“What excites me the most about coming here is the project we’re building. This is a club with a thoroughly planned roadmap, and I’m excited to be here,” Coach Edward remarked.
