AFCON 2023: Ghana Parts Ways with Coach Chris Hughton

Chris Hughton has been sacked as coach of Ghana by the Ghana Football Association after the Black Stars’ early elimination from the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.

Ghana ended with two points after three games in a group that comprised Egypt, Cape Verde, and Mozambique.

The Ghana Football Association announced Chris Hughton’s dismissal via a post on their website.

“The Ghana Football Association (GFA) wishes to announce that Chris Hughton has been relieved of his duties as head coach of the senior national team with immediate effect

“The executive council has also decided to dissolve the technical team of the Black Stars.

“The Ghana Football Association will in the coming days provide a roadmap on the future direction of the Black Stars,” the statement read.

Ghana had distant hopes of progressing as one of the four best-ranked third-placed sides but was eliminated on Tuesday when results went against them.

Hughton was appointed as Ghana’s head coach in February 2023

The 65-year-old former Newcastle United and Brighton boss was appointed as Ghana’s head coach in February 2022 to replace former coach Otto Addo who stepped down following the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, where Ghana finished bottom of Group H with one win from three matches.

It had looked like the 65-year-old would guide the Black Stars to the last 16 in the 2023 AFCON, with Ghana sitting second in Group B while holding a 2-0 lead over Mozambique in their final group game.

However, the Mambas scored twice in second-half stoppage time to clinch an unlikely draw which ultimately sent the Black Stars home.

The West Africans had also endured a mixed start to 2026 World Cup qualifiers under Hughton, beating Madagascar with a stoppage-time goal before losing 1-0 in Comoros.
