AFCON 2023: Cote D’Ivoire Fires Team Coach

The head coach of the Ivorian national football team has been sacked despite the team’s chance to reach the Africa Cup pre-quarters.

Jean-Louis Andre Gasset and his deputy Ghislain Marie Printant were gifted off today by the Ivorian football federation for the poor result recorded by the elephants of Cote d’Ivoire, at the ongoing 2023 African Cup Nations.

The sack comes after Jean Louis Gasset and the Elephants were humiliated by Equatorial Guinea in a 4-0 defeat in their last group stage game.

The Ivorian Football Federation (FIF) released in a statement on Wednesday that it was terminating the contracts of the French coach and his assistant for insufficient results by the contract objectives they had with the FIF.

“The contracts of coach Jean-Louis Gasset and his assistant Ghislain Printant are terminated due to insufficient results

“The Ivorian Football Federation expresses its regrets at the performance of the Elephants during the group stage,” the FIF said in a statement.

The 4-0 defeat to Equatorial Guinea was the heaviest home defeat in the Ivory Coast’s history, and they are the first Afcon host to lose two group games since they did so in 1984.

The Elephants still carry faint hopes of progressing to the last 16 as one of the best third-placed teams.

Emerse Fae, one of Gasset’s assistants, will take over as interim boss until the end of the tournament.

Ivory Coast finished the pool stage on three points in Group A having also 1-0 to Nigeria following a 2-0 win against Guinea-Bissau having also lost 1-0 to Nigeria following a 2-0 win against Guinea-Bissau in their opening match.

The hosts must now wait on the results of the last group games on Wednesday to see if they sneak through.
