Enugu Rangers International returned to winning ways with a hard fought 1-0 win over former Champions, Rivers United, for the first time since the 2019/2020 NPFL season.
That was a rescheduled matchday 11 encounter, of the 2023/24 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL).
The encounter which was played at the Cathedral, the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium, Enugu, saw the Flying Anteoples return to winning ways, courtesy of a delightful free-kick scored by Kazeem Ogunleye, in the 50th minute to stun Stanley Eguma led side.
Fidelis IIechukwu’s men couldn’t secure a positive point on the road away at Akwa United, in Matchday 19, after they suffered a narrow defeat to the Promise keepers in Eket on Sunday, January 21.
Meanwhile, Rivers United FC came into the game on the back of their 1-1 away draw with Doma United, last Saturday in Gombe.
The first half of the NPFL encounter ended goalless but Rangers International improved in the second half and had most of possession of the ball, with a brilliant free kick strike by former Plateau United man, Kazeem enough to give the host maximum points at the cathedral.
With the victory, Rangers Int’l moves three spots up to eight position on the log with 28 points after 19 games. While Rivers United remains in the 15th position on 21 points with four extra games in hand to play.
The Flying Anteoples will welcome Akwa United, when the second stanza commences on February 3rd, 2024, at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium, Enugu.
