Super Eagles striker Taiwo Awoniyi has encountered another setback in his career, facing a spell on the sidelines due to injury.
The unfortunate incident unfolded just hours before Nottingham Forest’s Premier League encounter against Luton Town. Awoniyi, a significant figure for Nottingham Forest since his move from Union Berlin last season, has struggled to maintain consistent performances due to recurring injury woes.
Despite high expectations following his impressive stint in the Bundesliga, the 26-year-old has been plagued by injuries during his tenure at the club, missing a total of 27 games. This season, Awoniyi faced a sluggish start due to fitness issues but gradually regained momentum.
However, a setback in November sidelined him for nearly three months, resulting in his exclusion from Nigeria’s squad for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations. Nonetheless, Awoniyi made a promising return in late January, featuring in nine games for Nottingham Forest and earning a call-up to the Super Eagles’ friendly matches against Ghana and Mali.
Unfortunately, Awoniyi’s comeback has been short-lived, as he was notably absent from Nottingham Forest’s recent Premier League fixture against Luton Town. The Athletic reports that the striker has sustained another injury, the severity of which remains undisclosed.
According to the same report, Awoniyi is expected to be sidelined for a few weeks, likely ruling him out of contention for Nigeria’s upcoming friendly matches against Ghana and Mali later this month.
