Former Nigerian international Benjamin James has been named as one of the assistant coaches for the Super Eagles under new head coach Finidi George. James, currently a youth coach at German Bundesliga club Hoffenheim, brings over a decade of experience in European football to the national team setup.
James, who grew up in Ajegunle, played professionally in the NPFL before moving to Italy and Germany. He and Daniel Amokachi will assist Finidi George.
The 53-year-old James carved out a successful playing career, starting with defunct clubs Police Machine and Stationary Stores of Lagos.
Finidi George, tasked with qualifying Nigeria for the 2026 World Cup, has received a one-year contract. The team’s first assignment is a June fixture against South Africa in Uyo, followed by a match against Benin Republic four days later.
James along with fitness trainer Chima Onyeike are expected to arrive in Nigeria next week. James’ appointment follows Finidi’s official unveiling by NFF President Ibrahim Gusau and Sports Minister John Enoh.
Finidi previously served as interim coach for the Super Eagles after a stint as assistant to former head coach Jose Peseiro during the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), where Nigeria finished runners-up. Completing the coaching staff is Mehmet Ozturk, who will serve as the team’s match analyst, bringing his experience working with European clubs to the table.
