In the wake of his appointment as the head coach of the Nigerian national football team, newly unveiled Super Eagles boss Finidi George has moved to quell the confusion surrounding his salary expectations.
The Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) introduced the former winger on Monday amidst conflicting reports regarding his potential earnings in his new role.
Addressing the media shortly after his unveiling in Abuja, George expressed a lack of concern regarding the financial particulars, emphasising his focus on the task ahead. “The money definitely will come,” he assured reporters, echoing his determination to prioritise performance over monetary considerations.
“I’m not quite worried about any [salary], even as much or more than what [Jose] Peseiro was earning,” George stated in a video interview with Footballtemple. “You know, I think what I’m getting is good enough for me at the moment. The moment I add value to what I am going to do, I think the money will come.”

Earlier reports had suggested a wide range of potential earnings for George, varying from N15 million to approximately $45,000 (over N66 million). However, the 53-year-old coach appeared unperturbed by these figures, expressing confidence that improved results on the field would inevitably lead to improved contractual terms.
“I think the Minister [for Sports] and NFF will definitely call me and say ‘coach, how much do you want?'” George remarked, underscoring his belief that performance will dictate financial negotiations. “So, for me, it’s all about work, work, and add value. So long as the team is going to win, money is going to come.”
Having signed an initial 12-month contract following the departure of Jose Peseiro, George’s immediate focus lies on revitalising Nigeria’s 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign and securing qualification for next year’s AFCON. A revered figure in Nigerian football, George was a key member of the 1994 AFCON-winning squad and boasts a decorated international career spanning 62 caps.
With his rich playing history serving as a foundation, George exudes confidence that replicating his success as a coach will inevitably be rewarded by the NFF and Ministry of Sports.
