Super Eagles new-boy Ibrahim Olawoyin makes vow ahead of South Africa game

Former Rangers winger Ibrahim Olawoyin has promised to give his all for the Super Eagles following his first-ever call-up to the Nigerian national team by manager Finidi George.

The 26-year-old, currently playing for Turkish club Rizespor, was among three players with Nigerian Premier Football League (NPFL) backgrounds to receive their international debuts from George. Olawoyin had a standout season in the Turkish league, scoring eight goals and providing three assists, helping Rizespor achieve a top-half finish after their promotion to the Super Lig.

Olawoyin Had Impressive Season

Olawoyin’s impressive performances in Europe had gone unnoticed by the national selectors until now. His call-up came after Bayer Leverkusen’s Nathan Tella withdrew from the squad for Nigeria’s upcoming 2026 World Cup qualifiers against South Africa and Benin Republic. Olawoyin, who contributed 11 goals from midfield for Rizespor last season, expressed his gratitude and determination to make the most of this opportunity.

Olawoyin’s Vow

“I will surely give my best because it is a privilege wearing this (Nigerian) jersey,” Olawoyin said. “You represent the whole nation, so I will give my best.”

Super Eagles’ World Cup Aspirations

The Super Eagles are aiming to return to the FIFA World Cup after missing out on the 2022 tournament in Qatar. After a rocky start with former coach Jose Peseiro, who only managed to secure two points from six, Finidi George is now tasked with reviving Nigeria’s World Cup hopes.
