Nigeria’s national football team captain, Ahmed Musa, has denied reports suggesting that he has retired from international football.
Despite not being called up by former Super Eagles head coach Finidi George for the World Cup qualifiers against South Africa and Benin Republic, and missing Nigeria’s seven matches at the 2023 AFCON tournament, Musa clarified his stance on his future with the national team.

In a chat with journalists in Kaduna following a friendly match he hosted, Musa addressed the retirement speculations, calling them baseless. He stated, “I only took a little break from the national team. But I didn’t exit the team.”
Musa, who last played for the Super Eagles in a World Cup qualifying match against Cape Verde in 2021, had a brief appearance in a friendly against Guinea in January before the AFCON.
His absence from recent matches and his decision to end his contract with Turkish side Sivasspor in February had fueled retirement rumors.
Throughout his career, Musa has achieved significant success, winning championships across three continents. He has played in Saudi Arabia, the Netherlands, England, Russia, and Turkey. His accolades include three Russian Premier League titles with CSKA Moscow, the Saudi League and Super Cup with Al Nassr, and the 2013 AFCON with Nigeria.
