Nigerian breakout star joins AS Monaco  for €20m

AS Monaco have finalised a deal to sign 17-year-old Nigerian forward George Ilenikhena from Royale Antwerp for €20 million, subject to a medical examination. Born in Lagos, Nigeria, Ilenikhena moved to France as a child and has risen through the ranks of European football.

Ilenikhena’s breakout season with Antwerp, where he scored 14 goals in 50 appearances, caught the attention of Monaco. He joins a list of Nigerian players who have donned the red and white of Monaco, including Victor Ikpeba, Sani Kaita, Henry Onyekuru and Elderson Echeijile.

The young striker is an admirer of French star Kylian Mbappé and models his game after the Real Madrid forward. Ilenikhena’s playing style is characterised by blistering pace, technical prowess and a keen eye for goal.

Despite representing France at youth level, Ilenikhena retains the option to switch his international allegiance to Nigeria in the future. This move brings him back to France, where he will look to continue his development and make a name for himself in Ligue 1.

The NFF would be looking to lure the young talented forward to the super Eagles squad. He is surely a player for the future and switching allegiance to the Super eagles will surely be a good one for the struggling 3-times African champions.

Ilenikhena  will be a player to watch in the upcoming season. With his skills and experience, he is poised to make a significant impact at Monaco and potentially on the international stage.
