NFF in dilemma over Super Eagles Coach appointment

More than six weeks after Finidi George’s resignation as the head coach of the Super Eagles, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) remains undecided on the appointment of a new manager for the senior national team.

According to authoritative sources, the NFF is currently divided over the choice of the new coach, with significant internal disagreements impacting the decision-making process.

Reports indicate that the NFF had initially leaned towards appointing Eric Chelle, a highly regarded coach with a strong track record. Chelle, who led the Mali national team with a win ratio of 79%, is seen as a candidate with the potential to elevate the Super Eagles. His tenure with Mali included 14 wins, 5 draws, and only 3 losses out of 22 games, with the team scoring 36 goals and conceding just 12.

However, opposition within the federation is championing Tom Saintfiet, a former coach of The Gambia, despite his lower win ratio of 28% with his previous teams. Critics argue that Saintfiet’s approach has been less effective in terms of scoring, which could pose challenges for the Super Eagles.

A top NFF source expressed preference for Chelle, emphasising his proven success in African football and the potential benefits he could bring to the Super Eagles. “Chelle has a win ratio of 79% with the Mali national team. He has knowledge of African football and can take the Eagles to the next level. We can also look at other top coaches around the world but certainly not Saintfiet,” the source noted.

The decision on the new coach is becoming increasingly urgent as Nigeria prepares for key fixtures in the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers. The Super Eagles are set to face Benin at home between September 2 and 6, followed by an away match against Rwanda between September 6 and 9.
