Reigning Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) champion, Akwa United has confirmed the departure of Kenny Boboye as Head Coach.
Boboye left the club following a run of poor results, including three successive home draws, the latest being a 0-0 draw with Heartland FC on Sunday in Uyo.
The former Plateau United coach took over from John Obuh in December 2019 and led Akwa United to their first NPFL title last season but has failed to replicate that form after twelve rounds of matches this season in which his side has managed four victories, five draws and three defeats, leaving the club 8th on the log with 17 points from 12 games.
The 43-year old was under increased pressure from the club hierarchy and was reportedly losing the dressing room, falling out with some of his players.
According to TVN, Boboye sent in his resignation letter immediately after the disappointing draw with Heartland on Sunday and thanked the club for the opportunity to serve.
“I want to thank everybody in Akwa United family for the time I have stayed with the team, but I think it is time to move forward, when the team is not doing well, it is the coach that faces the problems. I have just decided to say out, for the team to move forward. Thanks very much for the time given to me to work here,” the statement reads.
Deputy Head Coach, Ali Jolomi will be in charge of the team pending the appointment of a permanent head coach.
