Arsenal has announced that young Nigerian defender Joseph Olowu has extended his loan contract with Cork City until the end of the 2019/20 Premier Division season.

Oluwu joined Cork City on loan from Arsenal in January before the outbreak of COVID-19 which ended all sporting activities across the globe.

The 20-year-old defender has made five appearances for the League of Ireland Premier Division side since joining the club.

The North London club announced this afternoon on the club’s website that the young academy graduate will end the current season in Ireland.

“The Arsenal Academy graduate joined us aged 13 from Charlton Athletic, and has since developed through our youth development ranks. He captained our under-18s side before making his debut for our under-23s in June 2017. His development was recognised and he signed his first professional contract in December 2017.

“Everyone at the club looks forward to seeing his continued development and wishes Joseph the best of luck for the rest of his time at Cork City.”

Joseph Olowu ‘s deal is subject to the completion of regulatory processes and he will be hoping to impress Arsenal head coach Mikel Arteta.

The Gunners have seen increase in the number of young players moving from the academy to the senior squad, with the likes of Bukayo Saka, Eddie Nketiah and Joe Willock all enjoying a breakthrough season.
