Arteta bemoans lack of VAR despite Molde win

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has called on the inclusion of Video Assistant Referee (VAR) in the Uefa Europa League group stages following Arsenal’s 4-1 win against Molde.

After Eddie Nketiah’s goal was disallowed for offside following same incident last week against Dundalk, Arteta calls for the authority to consider their options.

“I don’t think it makes any sense when we have the technology and we all believe it is the right call for everybody to do it,” said Arteta.

“So I don’t understand, we were complaining with the referee because we were told he was clearly onside and obviously it’s a situation that can clearly change the game.

“So I think it is something they have to look at and if possible change it.”

Arsenal overcame an early scare to continue their perfect start in the Europa League with a comprehensive victory over the Norwegian champions at the Emirates Stadium.

Martin Ellingsen’s long-range effort gave the visitors a shock lead in the 22nd minute, but Arsenal, after a rather disjointed first-half performance, were back on level terms just before the break thanks to Kristoffer Haugen’s own goal in the 45+1 minutes.

The turnaround was complete in the 62nd minute as substitute Sheriff Sinyan also turned into his own net before Nicolas Pepe (69th minute) and Joe Willock (88th minute) added the gloss to the scoreline for Mikel Arteta’s side.

The victory moves Arsenal three points clear of Molde at the top of Group B as they race towards qualification for the Europa League knockout stages.

Arteta was also impressed by yet another Man of the Match performance by young midfielder, Joe Willock.

“The way he is approaching every opportunity shows how mature he is, I’m impressed with the way he is communicating as well. I think he is developing the right way, he is a player I really like.

“He has some very special qualities and he deserves every minute that he’s playing and he’s showing it with performances, with goals and his attitude.”
