Super Eagles interim coach, Austin Eguavoen, has responded to speculations regarding Chelsea centre-back Tosin Adarabioyo’s possible decision to switch allegiance from England to Nigeria.
The 27-year-old defender, born in England to Nigerian parents, is eligible to represent both nations but has yet to make a senior team appearance for either.
Adarabioyo, who has represented England at various youth levels, had an impressive season with Fulham before securing a summer move to Chelsea. However, despite his form, he missed out on Gareth Southgate’s England squad for the upcoming European Championships, leading to speculation that he might be reconsidering his options.
Rumours suggest that Adarabioyo could be open to playing for the Super Eagles, potentially forming a strong defensive partnership with William Troost-Ekong. Eguavoen confirmed that the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) is keeping tabs on the defender’s situation.
Speaking to reporters, Eguavoen said, “I didn’t speak with Tosin, but he’s a good player. He’s one of the players we’re monitoring. Every Nigerian playing worldwide has the right to play for Nigeria, including Tosin.”
The Super Eagles are preparing for a crucial double-header in the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers against Libya, and Eguavoen remains focused on strengthening the team as Nigeria eyes a successful campaign.
Adarabioyo’s potential switch would undoubtedly bolster Nigeria’s defensive options, adding to the team’s depth as they aim to qualify for AFCON and other major international tournaments.
