Awoniyi determines to prove himself at Liverpool

Nigeria and FSV Mainz 05 striker Taiwo Awoniyi has revealed that he is still nursing the ambition of playing for Liverpool, his parent club, despite being loaned out several times by the club.

Speaking with Liverpool FC, the 22-year old hitman believes he has improved enough to gain the favour of Jurgen Klopp and his coaches and hopes to replicate his fine form when he returns to Anfield.

“I don’t think I’m the same player as I was in the last few years. I personally have seen improvement in my game and I believe most Liverpool coaches have seen that as well.

“I just have to be prepared to improve myself and work on my weak points as well. When I’m back at LFC, I hope they will see that.”

The FSV Mainz 05 loanee needed just five minutes to find the back of the net on Sunday, coming off the bench to mastermind a comeback in an eventual 2-2 draw away to FC Koln.

It was his first goal in the Bundesliga since moving to Germany in August and he says he is determined to grow with consistency and to score more goals to help Mainz 05 survive relegation.

“Coming on from the bench, I know my team is in a difficult moment and for every player that was called upon, there is a lot of responsibility and you should come into the team to try to do the best and make the difference. That’s really what happened in the game.

“For me, I’ve always believed. I just have to fight and I just have to keep on going. Hopefully we can move ahead from there.” The former under 17 striker added.

The Ilorin-born marksman who has previously had loan spells at FSV Frankfurt, NEC Nijmegen, Royal Excel Mouscron and KAA Gent.
