Super Eagles winger, Moses Simon was a handful for the Pharoahs of Egypt during their opening fixture at the ongoing TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon and believes that victory has given the team confidence in their chances of winning the tournament.
Nigeria waited 32-years for their first competitive victory against the Egyptians, with Leicester City forward Kelechi Iheanacho grabbing the headlines with a stunning strike in the 30th minute.
The victory takes Nigeria to the summit of Group D and a win against Sudan on Saturday will secure their qualification to the knockout stage.
Simon, who was voted Nantes Player of the Year in 2020 in France says the team played to the coaches’ instructions, believing the win will give them more confidence in their abilities.
“The win (beating Egypt) gave us more confidence,” Simon told newsmen during the Nigeria’s training session on Wednesday in Garoua.
“It was not an individual display, it was a team effort.”
Although Moses Simon was outstanding against Egypt, the forward believes there’s room for improvement in his game while stating he will always do his best for the team.
“I will always do my best, if the coach says I should play left or right, that coach believes in me, that’s why he puts me there and I will do my best. I believe I made mistakes but the coach will understand, the coach will understand but the fans will not understand.”
Nigeria will face Sudan on Saturday by 4pm while Egypt take on Guinea-Bissau by 6pm.
