CAF announcement reveals stage Nigerian clubs will begin 2024/25 Champions League campaign

NPFL - Rangers International vs Bayelsa United

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has made an announcement that has revealed what stage Nigerian clubs, Rangers International and Remo Stars will begin their 2024/25 Champions League campaign.

Despite clinching the Nigeria Premier Football League title, Rangers International will begin their Champions League journey from the preliminary round.

Rangers, known as the Flying Antelopes, secured the league title from Enyimba International with a game to spare, thus qualifying for the Champions League alongside Remo Stars, who finished second.

However, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) announced on Tuesday that Rangers and Remo Stars are not among the clubs exempted from the preliminary round. The teams given a pass to skip this stage include defending champions Al Ahly of Egypt, Mamelodi Sundowns of South Africa, ES Tunis, TP Mazembe of DR Congo, and Petro De Luanda of Angola.

The draw for the competition is scheduled to take place on Thursday in Cairo, Egypt. This will determine the preliminary round matchups as Rangers International and Remo Stars prepare to battle for a place in the main tournament.

Despite the added challenge, Rangers International and their supporters remain optimistic about their chances in the prestigious continental competition.

Already, the Flying Antelopes have resumed pre-season activities, with the signing of new players at an advanced stage.
