Nigeria Professional Football League, NPFL champions, Rivers United on Wednesday advanced to the group stage of the 2022/2023 CAF Confederation Cup following a 1-1 draw with El Nasr in Benghazi.
Abdul Selam Al Fitouri open the scoring for the Libyans in the 39th minute, before former Kano Pillars forward Nyima Nwagua scored from a well delivered cross by Emmanuel Ampiah to leveled the game in the 57th minute.
The Pride of Rivers took a commanding 5-0 lead in the first leg at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium, Port Harcourt, before holding the Libyans to a 1-1 draw despite off-field intimidations from the home side.
The draw means Rivers United advances to the group stage of the CAF Confederation Cup with 6-1 aggregate score after two legs.
Coach Stanley Eguma has successfully taken Rivers United to their first qualification to the group stage of the CAF Confederation Cup since 2017.
Meanwhile, Nigeria other representative, Plateau United loss 3-0 to Al Akhdar despite a 4-1 lead from the first leg in Abuja last week.
The CAF Confederation Cup group stage draw will be conducted on Wednesday, November 16, 2022 in Cairo, Egypt.
