Cyril Dessers’ brilliant double sends Rangers to League Cup semifinals

Nigerian striker Cyril Dessers stole the show with a stunning brace as Rangers thrashed Dundee FC 3-0 to secure a semifinal spot in the Scottish League Cup.

Dessers’ goals in the 18th and 66th minutes, coupled with James Tavernier’s penalty, sealed the victory for Philippe Clement’s side at Ibrox.

Dessers, who had been linked with an exit from Rangers before the transfer window closed, demonstrated his importance to the team with his fifth and sixth goals of the season.

The 29-year-old Super Eagles striker has now scored in eight games across all competitions, providing two assists.

The opener came when Jefte’s through ball released Nedim Bajrami down the left. Bajrami’s cross found Dessers, who tapped home after Trevor Carson’s initial save.

Tavernier doubled Rangers’ lead from the spot five minutes after the restart, before Dessers sealed the win with a beautiful half-volley.

“Dessers was clinical, and his goals made the difference,” Clement said. “We’re delighted to reach the semifinals and look forward to the next challenge.”

Rangers, currently third in the SPFL table, five points behind rivals Celtic, will face Malmö FF in Sweden on Thursday in their Europa League clash.
