Debutants Willian and Gabriel give Arsenal perfect Premier League start

Arsenal began the 2020/2021 Premier League campaign with a perfect start after defeating Fulham 3-0 win against Fulham at Craven Cottage.

Alexandre Lacazette opened the scoring in the ninth minute from close range to give the visitors an early lead after a pass from new signing Willian Borgess.

Another debutant Gabriel Magalhaes nodded home Willian’s corner in the 49th minute to extend the Gunners lead before captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang curled home a beauty from just inside the box from another Willian assist on the 57th minutes to hand Arsenal and Mikel Arteta a dominant opening-day win.

It means Willian is the first player to assist two goals on his Premier League debut for Arsenal since Ray Parlour in August 1992 against Liverpool.

Arsenal looked well-drilled off the ball and assured on it throughout as Arteta looks to turn a work in progress into tangible success, while Fulham know they’ll have easier opponents as they look to succeed where they failed in 2019.

Gabriel, 22, who joined from Lille for £23 million had more touches of the ball (121), attempted more passes (113) and completed more passes (107) than anybody else – on his debut in English football, which earned him the Man of the Match award.

Speaking to BT Sport after the match, Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta said the team is determined to win every game.

“I wanted to see my team determined with a lot of energy and do the things we did in training. We did it today.

“Gabriel didn’t play for six months before today. Mohamed Elneny was brilliant. He has been excellent in training since day one. I know him well – we played together. Today he was phenomenal. All the boys tried really hard.”

On the Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang contract situation: “I’m really positive we’ll get it done. Hopefully in the next few days you can get some news.”
