D’Tigress head coach Rena Wakama makes ‘investment’ call to Nigerian authorities after Paris Olympic games exit

Nigeria’s D’Tigress may have been knocked out of the Paris 2024 Olympics by the USA, but their performance has left a lasting impression and offered hope for the future. The team fell 88-74 to the USA, who are on the verge of winning their tenth gold medal.

Head Coach Rena Wakama expressed optimism about the team’s prospects despite the loss. “The future is bright, but we have got to invest in us,” Wakama stated. “We have got to give these girls other resources to support and help them get to the podium and bring home a medal because we are capable of it.”

Wakama’s comments come in the wake of D’Tigress making history as the first African basketball team, male or female, to reach the Olympic quarterfinals.

The team’s run in Paris highlighted standout performances from players like Ezinne Kalu, Amy Okonkwo, and Elizabeth Balogun. Following their AfroBasket victory earlier in the year, there is strong belief in their ability to achieve even greater success with the right investment and support.
