Edidiong Essien, a member of Nigeria’s victorious Under 17 FIFA World Cup squad in 2015 has revealed how dubious agents nearly ended his football career despite having good offers from Europe.

Nigeria won the 2015 tournament in Chile beating Mali in the finals.

Essien, who scored in the 6-0 defeat of Australia in Round of 16, said that agents and other parties involved with young players are killing careers of promising talents in the country.

“I don’t want to talk about this because I won’t like to mention names,” he told The Athletic NG.

“But I’ll just like each and every upcoming footballer to understand one fact, that there is a difference between an agent, a manager, and an intermediary. That’s what is killing most promising careers here, the earlier they understand this, the better for their career.

The talented midfielder was one of the outstanding players under the tutelage of Coach Emmanuel Amunike but is yet to fulfill his potentials.

He advises young footballers who want to play football professionally not to sign contracts presented to them by football agents and scouts without understanding the terms of the agreement, stressing that these people use “tricks and invalid promises” to tie down players against their wishes.

“If I would advise, at grassroot level, I would say be careful before signing any paper with anyone, most of this people use tricks and invalid promises to hold down players, at this point, the player is at their mercy as they will frustrate any move that doesn’t fulfill their selfish interests.

“I think it’s necessary to properly educate our youngsters so they don’t fall into these wrong hands like I did, these unique qualified people have frustrated many promising careers and I was a victim,” Essien said.
