Ekong bids farewell to PAOK

Wiliam Troost-Ekong

William Troost-Ekong has bid an emotional farewell to PAOK Thessaloniki and its fans as he prepares to embark on a new chapter in his football career.

The Nigerian defender, who was named the AFCON 2023 Player of the Tournament, has been linked with a move to the Middle East following a stellar campaign with the Super Eagles in Ivory Coast.

The 30-year-old had been a key player for PAOK before suffering a serious injury—a ruptured biceps femoris in his right leg—in February, which required surgery and sidelined him for the remainder of the season. Despite the setback, Troost-Ekong played a vital role in PAOK’s successful Super League campaign, making 22 appearances and scoring one goal across all competitions.

Troost-Ekong has agreed to join Saudi Pro League side Al Kholood in a deal reportedly worth €1.2 million ($1.3 million). The contract includes a two-year term with an option for an additional year.

Following the announcement of his move, Troost-Ekong took to social media to express his gratitude to PAOK and its supporters. In his heartfelt message, he thanked the club’s president, staff, medical team, head coach Razvan Lucescu, and his teammates, whom he described as family.

“Dear PAOK, After an amazing year and season in Thessaloniki, I want to thank everyone for the opportunity to share and be part of those moments with you. I want to thank the president, club staff, medical team, General Lucescu, assistants, and especially my teammates who have become my family, for the belief and hard work that resulted in an unforgettable championship and special European nights. To the fans, thank you for the support through difficult times. Toumba is something special and now I understand what MONO PAOK means. I wish everyone another successful season and I will continue to follow PAOK. All the best, Will,” Troost-Ekong wrote.

Al Kholood was promoted to the Saudi Pro League last season after finishing third in the country’s second tier.
