Enyimba International goalkeeper Ojo Olorunleke is set for a new challenge after agreeing to a deal with Sudanese club Al Merrikh.
According to media reports from Aba, Nigeria, the 28-year-old shot-stopper has agreed to a two-year deal with the Sudanese side.
Olorunleke, a rock at the back for Enyimba in recent seasons, played a pivotal role in their 2023 NPFL title triumph, keeping an impressive 10 clean sheets throughout the campaign. His consistent performances earned him recognition at the national team level, with Olorunleke receiving three call-ups to the Super Eagles squad in 2024. Notably, he was the only Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) player included in the squad for the Africa Cup of Nations finals under manager Jose Peseiro.
The move to Al Merrikh offers Olorunleke a chance to test himself in a new league and environment. Often nicknamed “The Wall” by Enyimba fans for his commanding presence in goal, Olorunleke brings a wealth of experience to the Sudanese giants. He will be hoping to replicate his domestic success on the continental stage, with Al Merrikh regulars in CAF competitions.
While details of the transfer fee are undisclosed, Olorunleke will be leaving Enyimba as a free agent. His departure further depletes the chances of the Aba Elephants to consecutively lift the NPFL trophy as they are four points behind leaders, Enugu Rangers, with two matches left to the end of the season.
