Eric Chelle, newly announced as the head coach of the Nigerian national team, led MC Oran to a narrow 1-0 win over Union Sportive de Sétif in the Coupe d’Algérie Round of 32 on Saturday evening.
The Malian tactician’s impending move to the Super Eagles was confirmed earlier this week by the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF), creating a unique situation as Chelle remains contracted to the Algerian side.
Since his appointment in October 2024, he has overseen 13 matches for MC Oran, amassing six wins, two draws, and five losses and up to 6th on the table.
MC Oran addressed the situation in a midweek statement, clarifying that Chelle would oversee the crucial cup tie before discussions about his future.
On Saturday, he delivered a significant boost for the club, securing their spot in the Round of 16 through Merouane Dahar’s 51st-minute penalty.
Despite the victory, Chelle’s attention now turns to Nigeria, where he is set to succeed Finidi George as the Super Eagles’ head coach.

His appointment has sparked mixed reactions, with some stakeholders questioning his suitability, while others back his experience to lead the 2023 AFCON runners-up.
Chelle’s coaching credentials include a stint with Mali, where he registered 14 wins, five draws, and three losses before being relieved of his duties in June 2024.

While his departure from MC Oran is yet to be finalized, the match against US Sétif could mark a fitting end to his time with the Algerian side.
