Nigeria Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong has expressed his excitement upon his return to the national team after being controversially left out by former manager Finidi George.

The AFCON 2023 MVP’s return comes as Nigeria gears up for the upcoming AFCON 2025 qualifiers, bringing both experience and leadership back to the squad.

Troost-Ekong’s absence from the Super Eagles during crucial World Cup qualifiers against South Africa and Benin Republic earlier this year raised eyebrows among fans and observers alike.

However, Troost-Ekong had publicly stated his readiness to represent Nigeria, emphasizing in Lagos that he was “fit and ready whenever Finidi needed him ahead of the WCQ.”

The team was held to a draw at home by South Africa and suffered a shocking defeat to the Cheetahs of Benin Republic. Expressing his excitement, Troost-Ekong took to social media, posting on Facebook: “BACK ON HOME SOIL. LOCKED IN.” The post, accompanied by pictures of himself, clearly conveyed his enthusiasm and focus as he rejoined his teammates.

Troost-Ekong’s return to the Super Eagles comes at a critical time, with the team aiming to bounce back from recent disappointments and secure qualification for AFCON 2025. His experience, leadership, and outstanding performance at AFCON 2023 are expected to provide a significant boost to the squad as they look to restore their status as one of Africa’s top footballing nations.
