New Manchester City signing Ferran Torres says he is happy to join the club and is looking forward to developing under Pep Guardiola.

City yesterday completed the signing of Valencia winger Torres for 23m euros (£20.87m).

The Spaniard becomes Guardiola’s first summer signing and replaces Germany forward Leroy Sane, who left on 3 July for Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich.

The 20-year-old has signed a five-year contract which will keep him at the club till 2025.

Announcing the deal, City director of football Txiki Begiristain said the club had closely followed Torres’ progress.

“We have followed Ferran’s progress closely and have been very impressed.

“He is young and still developing, but his technical qualities are exactly what we are looking for in a winger. He is quick, direct, can create space with one movement and is capable of producing match-winning moments.”

The Spain U21 international added: “I am so happy to be joining City. Every player wants to be involved in attacking teams and Manchester City are one of the most attacking in world football,” the 20-year-old told the City website.

“Pep encourages a really open, aggressive style, which I love, and he is a manager with a proven track record of improving players. To have him overseeing my development is a dream.

“City have won plenty of trophies in the last 10 years and I hope I can play a role in continuing that success.”

Ferran Torres came through Valencia’s renowned academy and scored four times in 34 appearances last season as they finished ninth in La Liga.

He is considered one of Spain’s brightest young prospects but Valencia needed to sell some players to balance their books, even before the financial impact of coronavirus.

Meanwhile, Manchester City have also had a £40m bid for Bournemouth centre-back Nathan Ake accepted.
