According to latest reports, Finidi George may soon return to coaching just weeks after stepping down as the head coach of the Super Eagles.
Brief Tenure with the Super Eagles
Finidi, who initially served as an assistant and caretaker coach, was appointed head coach of the Super Eagles in May. However, he resigned after only 40 days due to tensions with the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF). His tenure saw two disappointing results against South Africa and the Benin Republic, leading the NFF to consider hiring a foreign coach as Technical Adviser. Upset by the lack of trust, Finidi resigned immediately.
Potential New Role with Rivers United
Rivers United is reportedly considering Finidi for their head coach position, as reported by The Nation. The club’s management is looking to make changes after an unimpressive end to the season. Rivers United started the season well, reaching the quarter-finals of the CAF Confederation Cup before being eliminated by USM Alger of Algeria. However, they struggled in the league, finishing outside the top spots and failing to secure a continental ticket for the first time in three years. Enugu Rangers won the NPFL title this season with a game to spare while Remo Stars finished as runners-up.
Finidi’s Previous Success
Finidi’s successful stint at Enyimba, where he won the league title in his first full season, could make him a valuable addition to Rivers United. His experience and proven track record might be just what the club needs to bounce back and regain their competitive edge.
