The Flying Eagles are set to receive a boost with the inclusion of several Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) stars, as the Under-20 team struggles to impress with mainly players from academies.
Under new coach Aliyu Zubairu, the Flying Eagles have posted a mixed bag of results since opening training camp in Abuja.
They narrowly beat non-league club Water FC of Abuja 1-0, only to lose to Mailantarki FC by the same scoreline.
A team official revealed that Zubairu is still screening players and will soon invite NPFL stars to join the team. “Their experience will come in handy as the coach continues to build his team.”

Zubairu also plans to draft overseas-based professionals into the team, further strengthening the squad.
The Flying Eagles face a tough test at the WAFU B U20 qualifying tournament, kicking off on October 17 in Lome, Togo. They are drawn in Group B alongside Cote d’Ivoire and Burkina Faso.
The ultimate goal is to secure qualification for the U20 AFCON, hosted by South Africa in January 2025, and subsequently, the U20 World Cup in Chile.
With the injection of NPFL stars and overseas-based pros, Zubairu will look to transform the team’s fortunes. His experience, having led El Kanemi to cup success, will be crucial in navigating the challenges ahead.
