Football is soulless without fans

Hi everyone, a quick one today as it is Sunday, the day of the Lord. Obviously, we are not going to church but my family usually gathers to have our own service.

Yesterday, football made a return to our screens in the form of the German Bundesliga and you will agree with me that it was a bit soulless with fans in the stadiums. My focus was on the Dortmund – Schalke match which as you know was the biggest when you consider a certain Mr. Erling Haaland scoring goals for fun, and he delivered again, scoring the opening goal to send his team to a comfortable 4-0 victory against their bitter rivals.

At the Red Bulls Arena, RB Leipzig, who had Ademola Lookman playing for them were lucky to escape with a point against Freiburg. They dominated the match as expected but Julian Nagelsmann’s side were unable to break down a disciplined Freiburg defense. The away side scored a last-minute goal which looked like all three points for them, but VAR intervened and the scores stood at 1-1.

Jamilu Collins played the 90 minutes for bottom club Paderborn as they secured a goalless draw away to Fortuna Dusseldorf. I didn’t watch the match itself and I thank God for that, a game played without a goal is always boring, to say the least.

Hoffenheim were beaten 0-3 at home by visiting Hertha Berlin which had German-Nigerian player Jordan Torunarigha. His team were comfortable winners at the end of the day.

Felix Uduokhai’s Ausburg were beaten at home by visiting Wolfsburg. The defender came on as a second-half substitute in the 65 minutes and after just three minutes scored a goal which was disallowed by VAR for offside and the away side scored the winning goal later to make it 1-2.

In the last match yesterday, Eintracht Frankfurt were beaten 3-0 at home by Borussia Monchengladbach. I watched parts of the match but didn’t really focus as the away team dominated their way to victory.

Today, champions Bayern Munich will travel to Union Berlin and Robert Lewandowski will be licking his lips against a mid-table team who have conceded more goals than they have scored. Anthony Ujah represents Nigeria’s interest and if they can upset the big boys, then we will be entertained.

Youngster, Joshua Zirkzee who is eligible to play for the Netherlands and Nigeria will be hoping to add to his impressive form this season. Fingers crossed we will see him today.

But before the match at the capital, two Nigerians Kingsley Ehizibue of FC Koln will face Taiwo Awoniyi’s Mainz 05 at the Rhein Energie Stadion. Cologne are 10th on the table with fullback Ehizibue catching the eye this season while Awoniyi will hope to impress as well. Let’s keep an eye on that too.

It was quite interesting to note yesterday the things which the players were instructed to observe. I keep saying if these players are playing, what is the need for social distancing? I am not a doctor or a health worker, so it might not mean anything to me, but to the authorities, it is important for them to keep the distance but look at the distance they gave themselves when they celebrated a goal.

From what we saw yesterday, players, the media, and money are all important in football but the fans, backing the teams, singing, and intimidating the opposition is very fundamental to the game itself. If you take the supporters away from the game, it becomes soulless. Let’s just hope things will soon return to normal.

Here in Nigeria, DSTV subscribers were mourning but it’s a fun time to have a Startime decoder, if you don’t, head over to the Apple store iPhone users or Google Play store for Android users, you can download the app for free and pay a little to watch it on mobile.

Let’s have more fun later today. Thank you for reading, till tomorrow have a great Sunday.
