After a tumultuous period, former Super Eagles combative midfielder Peter Etebo has secured a two-year deal with Turkish second division club Genclerbirligi. This transfer marks a significant turning point in Etebo’s career, which had stagnated since his contract with Stoke City expired in 2023.

Etebo’s rise to prominence began with his impressive performance at the 2015 U-23 Africa Cup of Nations, where he scored five goals.

This led to a move to Europe, playing for Feirense and later Stoke City. However, he struggled to find consistent game time, resulting in loan spells at various clubs, including Getafe, Galatasaray, Watford, and Aris Saloniki.

The 28-year-old midfielder has been without a club since his contract expiration, but Genclerbirligi’s offer has provided a much-needed lifeline. As the tenth Nigerian player to join the Turkish club, Etebo aims to contribute to their promotion bid to the Super Lig by the end of next season.

Etebo’s Super Eagles career has also experienced a decline, with his last appearance in 2022. He made 45 appearances for Nigeria, but the emergence of Wilfred Ndidi limited his playing time.

This transfer presents an opportunity for Etebo to revive his career and regain his spot in the Super Eagles. With his experience and skillset, he can make a significant impact at Genclerbirligi and potentially attract attention from higher-tier clubs.
