Former Super Eagles captain Vincent Enyeama honored his late father, Coach Phillip Enyeama, with a ceremonial kickoff at a novelty football match held at the Uyo Township Stadium on Tuesday evening.

The match was played in memory of Coach Phillip Enyeama, who will be laid to rest this weekend in Akwa Ibom State.

In an emotional tribute, ex-Akwa United and Ibom Stars FC players defeated Consolidated All-stars 3-1. The game showcased the deep respect and admiration held for Coach Phillip Enyeama, a pivotal figure in his son’s meteoric rise in football.

Coach Phillip Enyeama’s guidance and mentorship were instrumental in Vincent Enyeama’s early career at Ibom Stars. This foundation paved the way for Enyeama’s illustrious career, which spanned nearly two decades.

Vincent Enyeama played for several clubs, including Ibom Stars, Enyimba, Iwuanyanwu Nationale, Bnei Yehuda, Hapoel Tel Aviv, Lille, and Maccabi Tel Aviv. His national team career began in 2002, culminating in 101 caps, making him Nigeria’s most capped player until Ahmed Musa surpassed him in November 2021. Enyeama served as the Super Eagles captain from 2013 until his retirement from international football in October 2015.

The late Coach Phillip Enyeama passed away in February 2024, leaving behind a legacy of dedication to the sport and a profound impact on his son’s career and Nigerian football at large. He will be laid to rest this weekend in Akwa Ibom State, marking the end of an era for the Enyeama family and Nigerian football.

In his remarks, Vincent Enyeama expressed deep gratitude for his father’s unwavering support and mentorship, stating, “My father’s guidance shaped my career and life. His legacy will forever remain in the hearts of those he touched. Today’s match is a testament to his influence and love for football.”
