English international scout Francis Cagigao who is Arsenal’s head of recruitment is among the 55 staff that will be made redundant by the club.
Cagigao is credited with scouting Cesc Fabregas, Robin Van Persie, Hector Bellerin and most recent, young Brazilian forward Gabriel Martinelli.
Arsenal in a statement on Wednesday, the club proposed 55 redundancies of staff members to help with the rebuild of the first team.
“Over recent years we have consistently invested in additional staff to take the club forward but with the expected reduction of income in mind, it is now clear that we must reduce our costs further to ensure we are operating in a sustainable and responsible way, and to enable us to continue to invest in the team.
“Our aim has been to protect the jobs and base salaries of our people for as long as we possibly can. Unfortunately, we have now come to the point where we are proposing 55 redundancies.
“We do not make these proposals lightly and have looked at every aspect of the club and our expenditure before reaching this point. We are now entering the required 30-day consultation period on these proposals,” the state reads.
The club have come under severe criticism by supporters for the decision to let go of 55 staff of the source of livelihood during this difficult period.
Former Arsenal captain, Fabregas who was spotted by Cagigao and subsequently joined the club from Barcelona in 2003 has paid a glowing tribute to the former scout.
Fabregas tweeted this afternoon, thanking Cagigao for spotting him 15 years ago.
“Thank you for the 24+ years of devotion, respect, loyalty and love you gave to @arsenal Nothing would have been the same for me if you didn’t spot me at 15 years old. I wish you all the very best for the future. Your next team will be very lucky to have your football brain.”

As well as Francis Cagigao, who had been at Arsenal for more than two decades, senior scouts Brian McDermott and Peter Clark were also told on Wednesday that they no longer had jobs.
Goal reports the move is not to save money but a complete overhaul of the club’s recruitment department by Technical Director, Edu Gasper.
Many supporters feared Arsenal are now dealing with super agent Kia Joorabchian who has in recent years represent some of the players joining Arsenal including David Luiz, Cedric Soares, Pablo Mari and the expected arrival of Willian and Phillipe Coutinho.
