Gernot Rohr: Contract renewal not my biggest problem

Coach Gernot Rohr

Super Eagles Technical Adviser, Gernot Rohr says renewing his contract with the Nigerian national team is not his biggest problem due to the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic.

Rohr’s contract will expire at the end of June and it is expected that the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) will offer him a new deal to extend his stay with three times AFCON winners.

The Franco-German tactician was expected to be in Nigeria since match to guide the Super Eagles through two Afcon qualifying matches against Sierra Leone, and also sign a new deal.

But the NFF President, Amaju Pinnick, last week on Arise TV, said changes have been made to the new contract, which will see Rohr’s salary being paid in the Nigeria currency (Naira) and will also require the coach to relocate to Nigeria and see how he can help nurture players in the NPFL.

Rohr who is not in a hurry to extend his deal which runs till June said the most important thing at this point is the health of the people in the fight against COVID-19.

Speaking to ESPN, Rohr said: “The contract is going on until the end of June. But it is not the most important, for me and for everybody. My personal situation is not the most important.

“The most important is the health of everybody, that all is going well for our people and for our fans. And I hope that they will stay safe.

“Don’t worry about my contract. It is really not a problem. The problem really is the medical problem, the virus. We are all focused on this so my own situation is secondary.”

He added: “In February we had a good meeting in London with the president and my assistant. We were together for two days and we prepared already something for my contract.

“But it is not for me to communicate because I know what we speak about. That is why I said we had a good meeting. We are still in touch.

“But again, it is not the most important at this moment if Rohr has another contract or not. Until the end of my contract, I will continue my work.”
